Dual Special needs (D-SNP)

Dual Special Needs Plans (D-SNPs) are for individuals who qualify for both Medicare and Medicaid, providing excellent healthcare benefits at a low cost—here is everything you need to know about D-SNPs.

Qualifying for a D-SNP

D-SNPs are only useful to you, of course, if you qualify. As the name implies, you must be dually-enrolled in both Medicare and Medicaid for this Advantage SNP.

You’re required to have both Medicare Parts A and B. Then, for Medicaid eligibility, you must have some financial need. This is typically based on Modified Adjusted Gross Income (MAGI). You are, however, exempt from this requirement if you have a serious disability (including blindness) and/or are age 65 or older. And, because you must meet one of these requirements for Medicare eligibility, your Medicaid eligibility is instead based on Supplemental Security Income (SSI) rather than MAGI.

Coverage with a D-SNP

Coverage with a D-SNP will fall into certain categories based on your specific needs. You’re grouped based on whether or not you:

Once you know what group you fall into, the better idea you’ll have of what benefits you’ll receive. Generally, however, you will have basic Original Medicare benefits, with a few additions that depend on your category and provider.

Part A Medicare benefits include short-term hospital care. Part B covers a large variety of Medicare expenses, including preventative care, diabetes supplies, and much more.

Most D-SNPs also include prescription drug coverage as well.

Don’t Settle For Anything Less.
