Medicare Eligibility

Medicare eligibility is mostly based on your age. Other factors may include your health, whether you have a disability, and your work history. Most people become eligible at age 65, although people under 65 can get Medicare if they meet certain criteria.

Original Medicare Eligibility at Age 65

At age 65, you can sign up for Medicare Parts A and B (during your Initial Enrollment Period) if you’re not automatically enrolled. Your IEP will begin three months before your birthday, include your birth month, and end the three months after. It’s important to enroll during this 7-month window to avoid the risk of late penalties.

Once you have Original Medicare, you’re able to get additional coverage during certain times of the year, including Part C (Medicare Advantage), Part D (prescription drug coverage), and Medicare Supplemental insurance (Medigap).

Medicare Advantage Eligibility

You must be enrolled in Original Medicare (A and B) and live in the plan’s service area to join a Medicare Advantage plan. Common types of plans available to Kirkwood, Missouri residents are:

  • Health Maintenance Organization (HMO)
  • Preferred Provider Organization (PPO)
  • Private Fee-For-Service (PFFS)
  • Special Needs Plan (SNP)

There are three potential options for Special Needs Plans:

  • Dual-Enrollment Special Needs Plan (D-SNP)
  • Institutional Special Needs Plans (I-SNP)
  • Chronic Special Needs Plan (C-SNP)

If you’re eligible for Medicare (based on the factors listed above) and are enrolled in Medicaid, you may be eligible for a D-SNP. Alternatively, if you have a qualifying chronic illness, you may qualify for a C-SNP. There are many conditions that can make you eligible — just ask your doctor to find out.

Medigap Eligibility

Another great option for coverage is Medigap or Medicare Supplements. There are 10 different plans to choose from: A, B, C, D, F, G, K, L, M, and N.

The best time to enroll in a supplement plan is during your Medigap Open Enrollment Period, which begins as soon as you turn 65 and are enrolled in Medicare Part B. Past this period, you’ll have to go through medical underwriting where the insurance company can determine your eligibility based on your past and current health.
