In 2020, roughly 20% of Missouri’s population received Medicare benefits. Are you interested in learning more about how you might qualify to receive Medicare benefits too? It’s easy to find out if you’re eligible, and this is the best place to get started.
There are a few ways to qualify for Medicare in Missouri. However, the most common way to do so is by age. You must be 65 years old or older. Once you reach this age, you are eligible for Medicare Part A and Part B (Original Medicare), Medicare Part C (Medicare Advantage), Medicare Part D, or a Medicare Supplement plan (Medigap).
You must also be a U.S. citizen or a permanent legal resident who has lived in the U.S. for more than five years.
Besides age, there are a few other ways you can qualify for Medicare in Missouri. Suppose you are disabled and unable to work for an extended amount of time. In that case, you may qualify for Medicare with a disability.
Once you have been enrolled in and received 24 months (2 years) of Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI), you should be automatically enrolled in Medicare.
Missourians can also become eligible for Medicare if they have End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) or Lou Gehrig’s Disease (ALS). If you have either of these ailments, you’ll be automatically enrolled, or you can contact your local Social Security office.
How to Enroll Once You’re Eligible
If you’re turning 65 soon and know you’re eligible, all that’s left to do is enroll. The first step is to find out when your Initial Enrollment Period (IEP) takes place. This is the absolute best time to enroll in Medicare if you’re eligible based on age.
The IEP takes place three months before, the month of, and three months after your 65th birthday. This gives you seven months to join Medicare and start receiving its coverage. Enrolling during this period is also highly recommended as it can save you from paying late enrollment penalties.
